Heliwr!

Heliwr! Where's he gone Mam?

To hunt Gwelda, to hunt animals for our food.

Why doesn't he play with me Mam? Does Heliwr hate me?

Of course not cariad, what reason would he have to hate you.

Because I have three eyes and he only has two.

Three beautiful green eyes. How lucky you are. Maybe you're right, maybe Heliwr is                           a tiny bit jealous of you.

What does jealous mean Mam?

SHE SITS AT MAM'S FEET AND PLAYS WITH HER DOLL

It's not a nice thing Gwelda, jealousy. It's a monster that eats you up and turns you                               into a monster like itself, so that sometimes you can't see anything clearly and your                             stomach is churned inside out and you just want to hurt people because you are                                   hurting so much yourself.

MAM PICKS UP GWELDA'S DOLL AND PUTS IT ON HER KNEE.

See Gwelda, if Molly was a real girl and I sat her on my knee and brushed her hair                                 and fed her with the best rabbit stew and cake and sang her to sleep at night...and                               you were left to hunt for your own food and sleep on the floor,  you might begin to                               feel jealous of Molly.

But I love Molly, she would never turn me into a monster.

No, you are a kind and gentle girl Gwelda but you will have to go out into the big                                    wide world now and people aren't all as nice as you out there. You will have to learn                           some hard lessons.

School is a world in itself. We watch children come and go, make friends and
break friends.

Some children thrive in school, some hate it – even if they only have two eyes.

This is the world into which Gwelda entered one chilly winter day.
